A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
