They're Doing across America What They Executed within Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.

We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the leader try to upend the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a figure of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing too.

The evident and direct truth that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of radical love focused on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Highest of Us

So I have been heartened to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to help build the initiative that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or not?

The nation is most protected, in other words, through connection to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to that which renders it distinctive and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most negative of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it means both modesty and belief, a combination that serious American Christians ought to accept.
