This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
